How do I use the baitcaster?

I received a Daiwa Samurai baitcaster rod and reel for Christmas. I have fish all the time, but has never used baitcaster. Apparently I set it up to prevent the backlash? What does this mean? I know that has something to do with the knob attached to coil, but what should I do?
